Strike rate and batting average calculator

How fast a batter scores and how many runs they make each time they are out. Not-outs add runs without a dismissal, and a list of scores gives you the whole season at once.

53 runs off 40 balls is a strike rate of 132.50. With 1 dismissal, the average is 53.00.

Strike rate, average and the not-out question

Strike rate is runs per 100 balls faced: 53 off 40 balls is 53 ÷ 40 × 100 = 132.50. It tells you how quickly a batter scores, which matters most in short formats. Scorers count a no-ball the batter receives as a ball faced, but not a wide, and runs from byes, leg byes and wides never go to the batter.

Batting average is runs divided by the number of times out, not by innings. A not-out adds runs but no dismissal, so 30*, 40* and 20 is 90 runs for one dismissal: an average of 90, higher than any of the three scores. A batter who has never been out has no average yet; scorecards usually show a dash.

The two numbers answer different questions. A finisher who often comes in for the last few overs may have a high strike rate and a modest average; an opener in a long game may be the other way round. Put them side by side, and look at boundary share, to see how a batter gets their runs.

For a season, paste the scores into the second box: it counts innings, not-outs, fifties, hundreds and ducks (out for nought; 0* is not a duck), then sends the totals to the calculator above.

Questions

Why isn't the average just runs divided by innings?

Because a not-out innings hasn't ended: the batter might have scored more. Dividing by dismissals instead treats every innings as part of one long knock that is only interrupted when the batter is out.

What counts as a good strike rate?

It depends on the format and the job. A rate that looks slow in a 20-over game can be brisk in a two-innings match, where staying in matters more. Compare batters in the same format and a similar role.

Do retired-hurt innings count as not out?

Yes. A batter who retires through illness or injury and doesn't come back is recorded as retired not out, so mark the score with a star. A batter who retires for any other reason and doesn't resume is recorded as retired out, which counts as a dismissal.
